Dr. Antje Boetius is a professor of geomicrobiology and vice dir­ector of the MARUM Cluster of Ex­cel­lence at the University of Bremen. She also leads the HGF-MPG Joint Re­search Group on Deep Sea Eco­logy and Tech­no­logy, AWI, at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology. Boetius’ research focuses on the microbial ecology of the deep sea, the marine methane cycle, gas hydrates and cold seeps, geomicrobiology, and the global carbon cycle. Her work has been recognized on a number of occasions with awards that include: the Copernicus Medal, Gauss Medal, Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft, ECI Ecology Prize, Gustav Steinmann-Medal of the Geological Union of Germany, and a MARMIC teaching award. Boetius is an elected member of the European Academy of Sciences, European Academy of Microbiology, Acadamy of Sciences and Literature Mainz, the German Science Council, Na­tional Academy Leopoldina, and EMBO. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Geophysical Union.
