1. Data Management Policy Development and Culture Building
The DCO Data and Information Policy was updated and put at a more discoverable and accessible place through the DCO community portal deepcarbon.net. It is now as an entry under the first menu item 'Deep Carbon Science' on the main page of that portal. Since the 2014 Summer, Peter Fox, Marshall Ma and Han Wang have given lectures and presented posters at several workshops organized by the DCO community to promote the culture of data management and open data, such as 'Deep Carbon Virtual Observatory: Leveraging Data Science to Facilitate Earth Science Research' at the DCO-EPC workshop, UCLA in October 2010 , and 'Deep-Time Data Infrastructure: A Socio-technical System' at the Deep Time Data Workshop at San Francisco in December 2014. They also introduced the data management works of DCO at international conferences such as 'DCO-VIVO: A Collaborative Data Platform for the Deep Carbon Science Communities' at the AGU 2014 Fall Meeting and 'Why Data Science Matters' at the SciDataCon2014 conference organized by the international scientific data organization CODATA. Marshall Ma was awarded the Inaugural ISCU-WDS Data Stewardship Award in November 2014 for "exceptional contributions to the improvement of scientific data stewardship".
2. Updates to the technological framework
In January, the DCO-Data Science team was awarded a small funding from the Research Data Alliance (RDA), a NSF funded international initiative for scientific data. The funding for the Data Science Team is to promote the adoption of RDA's working outputs on data type registry and persistent identifier description. The work leads to slight updates to the DCO ontology of the DCO data portal. The output enriches the description of datasets because the data types describes not only file formats or types but also specific types in geoscience research, such as gas, geochemistry, thermodynamics. Stephan Zednik presented the work 'Data types and persistent identifiers in the Deep Carbon Observatory Data Portal' at the Fifth RDA Plenary, San Diego, USA in March 2015. Marshall Ma presented the work 'Formal Specification of Data Types in the Deep Carbon Observatory Data Portal' at the Second DCO International Science Meeting, Munich, Germany in March 2015. A facet of 'data types' was added to the DCO dataset browser and the Data Science team is testing it to make it work well with the current framework.
