  • A decadal goal of the Deep Carbon Observatory is to improve the global monitoring of carbon degassed through volcanoes in order to radically improve our knowledge of the deep carbon cycle. Only a small proportion of active volcanoes are currently being monitored, and the flux of gaseous carbon species varies significantly in space and time within and between different volcanoes. The paucity of volcano monitoring is due to both insufficient resources and a lag in field instrument capability. 

    DCO sponsored a Sandpit Workshop at Etna volcano in Sicily, Italy on 2-5 September 2013. The primary aim of the workshop, “Developing The Next Generation Sensors For Monitoring Volcanic Carbon Flux”, was to stimulate novel instrumentation. Mount Etna is a well-supported European “laboratory volcano,” and the workshop encouraged research and development representatives from both academic and industrial sectors to address the needs of international field volcanologists. Six new designs, including new technology prototypes, were discussed or demonstrated at the workshop.
