  • This project seeks to compile data on diamonds and diamond inclusions from peer-reviewed journals to make them available for the community, and to prepare an online diamond specimen catalog using the System for Earth Sample Registration (SESAR). We assembled a comprehensive database of approximately 100 publications with relevant diamond datasets, extracted data from 84 publications into EarthChem data templates, and ingested about 30 datasets into the PetDB database. These data are fully accessible via the PetDB search interface. In order to streamline access to the diamond data in PetDB, we implemented a quick link on the PetDB search page that allows users to access diamond data readily. The remaining datasets will be added when the new EarthChemDB (under development) is released that has the capability to properly capture the hierarchical relationship between individual diamond specimens, inclusions, and components of the inclusions.

For the diamond specimen catalog, we worked with DMGC lead Steve Shirey to define recommended metadata for diamond specimens and provide guidelines to DMGC investigators for sample registration. We presented these guidelines to the DMGC meeting at Goldschmidt 2013 in Florence, Italy, and demonstrated use of the SESAR software tools for sample registration and submission of metadata.
