Registering geoscience samples: The DCO Data portal worked by the DCO Data Science Team is defining a "dco:GeoSample" class in the DCO ontology. This class is equivalent to the concept of geo-samples in the International Geo Sample Number (IGSN). To improve the interoperability of the "dco:Geosample" records the DCO-DS groups adopt the metadata schema assembled in the IGSN. See more details of the IGSN metadata schema at http://www.geosamples.org/metadata. At the 2013 IGSN General Assembly (along with AGU Fall Meeting 2013), RPI was accepted as a full member of the IGSN.
Publishing geoscience data papers: The Geoscience Data Journal (Wiley) provides an open access platform where scientific data can be formally published, in a way that includes scientific peer-review. The DCO data portal meets the Guidelines for Repositories of GDJ and is now a certified data portal of the journal. DCO community members are recommended to submit data papers to GDJ. See more details of the journal at: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/%28ISSN%292049-6060.
EPC Computer Cluster: The DCO Data Science team collaborated with EPC community and established a data archiving, data management and modeling infrastructure that supports research of the EPC, the DCO, and the larger scientific community.
Exploratory data visualization of datasets from Census of Deep Life: The objective of the project was to explore the Mimarks-compliant datasets and create visualizations from a data science perspective and depict data in a more intuitive manner. Basically, this was a dark data exercise since the team did not have any background knowledge of the domain.
